If you’ve ever stood in your driveway staring at your landscape beds trying to figure out whether to go with mulch or pine straw, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get from homeowners in the Raleigh area. The good news is there’s no wrong answer — both work well, and a lot of it comes down to your yard, your plants, and your preference. Here’s how we break it down for our customers.
Pine Straw
Pine straw is popular in the Raleigh area for good reason. It’s affordable, it spreads easily, and it gives landscape beds a natural, clean look. It’s also a great fit for certain plant types — azaleas and other acid-loving plants actually thrive with pine straw because it adds a slight acidity to the soil as it breaks down.
The main downside is that it doesn’t last as long as mulch. You’ll typically need to refresh it more often, and it can blow around or scatter into your lawn after heavy rain or wind.
Best for: large natural areas, back yards, beds with pine trees or acid-loving plants like azaleas.
Mulch
Mulch is our most popular option for front yard beds and high-visibility areas. It stays in place better than pine straw, provides excellent moisture retention for your plants, and adds nutrients back into the soil as it breaks down. A fresh layer of hardwood mulch can make a landscape look sharp almost instantly.
The tradeoff is cost — mulch runs more per yard than pine straw, and it takes more effort to spread. It’s also worth getting a professional quote before you order because it’s easy to underestimate how much you need.
