When our client came to us looking to reimagine an underused part of their backyard, the project grew into a full residential landscape design, covering everything from grading and drainage to the finished planting selection. We started by removing a shed and grading the area properly, since getting the ground right is what makes everything built on top of it last. From there we constructed an L shaped retaining wall using Bellgard Diamond Pro block, paired with a drainage system behind it so water has somewhere to go instead of pooling against the wall.
With the grading and drainage in place, we built out a paver patio using Techo Bloc pavers in a greyed nickel finish, complete with a border and cap stone for a finished look. That patio now serves as the foundation for a new gazebo, and we added a trellis alongside it for star jasmine to climb as it fills in. On the other side of the yard, we leveled the ground for a small pool shed and laid a flagstone pathway leading up to it, and we replaced a section of aging concrete with fresh pavers so the whole space reads as one cohesive design rather than a patchwork of materials.
Hardscape was only half the project. We also redesigned the planting beds along the back foundation of the home, clearing out what was there and starting fresh with a mix of star jasmine, Florida sunshine anise, cinnamon dystillium, dwarf butterfly bush, limelight hydrangeas, and fire chief arborvitae. Everything went in on drip irrigation to keep watering consistent and efficient, and we finished the beds with a fresh layer of mulch.
This is what residential landscape design looks like when it’s done as one connected project rather than a handful of separate jobs.
